Thanks to these health vouchers, 70 blind or visually impaired people will receive much needed cataract surgery in a health centre and will be able to see again.

Poverty causes blindness. And blindness in turn leads to poverty. Adults with impaired vision have trouble finding work and, in many countries, blind children cannot go to school. All too often, blind children are neglected, undernourished and therefore at risk of other diseases. The most common cause of blindness is cataracts. Yet it is curable: the clouded lens can be removed and replaced by an artificial lens in about 20 minutes. But information about the treatment and ophthalmic care is not available to most of the Togolese population. When those affected lack access to treatment, they gradually lose their sight. An additional problem is the lack of facilities and limited access to them for families in remote areas, who cannot afford transport to the nearest hospital. The Red Cross aims to provide access to those who need it most.

Your donation will provide a blind person with a voucher to get cataract surgery in a health centre. In Togo, cataract surgery costs just 70 francs. This includes all surgery supplies and equipment maintenance in the Ministry of Health hospitals. Togolese Red Cross volunteers identify the most vulnerable people in need of a cataract operation who then receive a voucher covering the surgery and part of the travel expenses. But the vouchers do not only provide financial support; they also guarantee that the patients will actually be attended to and receive the healthcare they need. This is expected to increase their motivation to visit a health centre and so lead to more people having cataract surgery – especially benefitting the most vulnerable people in Togo.

70 vouchers (5,000 francs) will benefit the most vulnerable people in Togo in need of consultations, eye surgery or other treatments.

The operation changes a life forever – children can go back to school and face their future with optimism. Adults can find work again and support their families.

The total funding of CHF 5,000 will allow 70 vouchers to be distributed to the most vulnerable people in Togo.
