Birds of prey (raptors) are most of the time are misunderstood species and sometimes face threats from the people. Threats like unnecessary killings by shooting or poisoning. Sometimes by destroying of their nests and killing of newborn, even by relocating them from their nest to spots where they can easily be targeted by predators or they starve to death as their parents fails to locate or feed them.
Some parts of the world where raptors are considered unlucky and thought of bringing bad luck with them. This superstition brings a hostile behavior towards them by the general public, sometimes this results in not supporting of rescue efforts towards them at the time of the need for rescue and a rehabilitation effort.
Overall, in terms of veterinary care and techniques the organizations need more coordination and exchange of knowledge for their care as there are big gaps in knowledge about their care and veterinary care.
Raptor Rescue and Research Inc. is planning to fill in the gaps by helping in networking of these organizations to come together and share their expertise in their respective fields. This will in enable organization in underdeveloped parts of the world. New techniques which are developed by more technically advanced rehabilitation organizations in the developed world helps the other organizations which are not so well to do with the latest machines and techniques.
There are some local techniques which are used by native people in some remote places which has shown results and have a potential for further research and growth, which in turn can be incorporated with more scientific and advance techniques and further developed into a novel procedures and techniques.
A good example is the wing repair orthopedic surgical technique which is used in traditional surgical procedure in India where there are huge number of cut wounds in birds due to the tradition of paper kite flying. Combining these traditional techniques with the more equipment dependent techniques, Wildlife Rescue in India has developed a novel orthopedic surgical protocol to repair patagium part of the wing of a bird which is helping in recovery of a god number of birds in India and there is a good potential for this procedure to being incorporated in other parts of the world.
Raptor Rescue and Research Inc. has a goal to build a good network of organization which are working all over the world to protect and rehabilitate birds of prey. This conservation effort is crucial in the overall conservation of birds of prey.
Another Raptor Rescue and Research Inc. goal is to help organizations which are involved in the research on birds of prey, either in the overall studies which will help in the conservation or / and in the research of the veterinary medicine and surgery techniques.
